Volunteer Opportunities

The work that Literacy Alberni does in our community would not be possible without our dedicated volunteers. As a volunteer, you are joining a team of passionate people who are working to transform lives.

Please check out our volunteer opportunities below. We have a wonderful group of volunteers and would love for you to be a part of it!

English Language Learner Tutoring

We offer tutoring to new Canadians (adult immigrants) who need help learning the English language. We usually have a waiting list of clients for tutoring, so this opportunity is often available.
You do not have to have a teaching background to tutor; just a willingness to help out!
This tutoring can be done remotely or in-person. We ask the learner their preference, and try to find a tutor who can accommodate that preference.
We do not have a particular curriculum for tutoring, but we do have tons of materials that tutors are free to use, and they’re also always welcome to chat with our staff for suggestions and advice on where to start and what materials to use.

Adult Literacy Tutoring

We also offer tutoring to Canadians (native English speakers) who need help with literacy. In some cases, they didn’t finish school or had a bad experience, and in other cases, they need help with things like studying the driver’s license manual.
This tutoring can also be done remotely or in-person, and, again, we let the learner choose what they prefer.

Adult Phone & Tablet Support

We often have requests from adults in the community who need help learning to use a cell phone, tablet, or computer. Volunteers who are tech savvy enough to help are always in high demand! This tutoring is best done in-person.

Community Involvement

As things in town begin to open up again, we’d really like to get out into the community more. We’d love some volunteers who are willing to participate in random events, whether it’s helping at events, like working the booth at the Fall Fair, or helping decorate our window in the Coulson’s building on 3rd Avenue!
We also definitely welcome ideas from volunteers about local events that we may not be aware of.
We may also have opportunities for in-office volunteer work from time to time.
In the past, volunteers have helped us wrap pajamas for the PJs and a Book campaign, and have helped stuff envelopes with letters to our donors, thanking them for their donations.

Book Sorting

Our Little Library program has undergone some changes recently. A partnership was created between Literacy Alberni, the Rotary Club of Port Alberni, the AV Times, and the Alberni-Clayoquot Recycling Depot, with Literacy Alberni primarily handling the book sorting portion of the program.
Books are donated in bins at the Recycling Depot on 3rd Avenue, our LAS volunteers sort the books, and they are transported to the AV Times office to await distribution. Rotary Club members pick up the books there and distribute them throughout the community.
Currently, Literacy Alberni volunteers are only responsible for book sorting.

Klitsa Tutoring

For any potential volunteers with a background in education, working at Klitsa Tutoring is also an option. Through Klitsa Tutoring, we offer after-school tutoring to kids ages 5 and up. The families pay for this tutoring, so the tutors are compensated for their time. Tutors are required to have a teaching certificate or equivalent experience, so the rules are more strict than those for volunteering with LAS.
You can find more information on tutoring with Klitsa here.
